"Redfish, Redfish, and more Redfish"

I have a month or more of reports to write on, but I don't have any pictures this time due to my 14 month old Kodak digital camera hitting the skids for no apparent reason. Wouldn't you know when I checked out the Kodak website they were sorry to inform me but my camera just went out of warranty and I would have to have this one replaced. Enough about that let's get to the fishing.

The Redfish had been reported as showing up all over the place. I had yet to find them like some of the others had but I knew I would soon. As it turned out the Redfish were loaded at Redfish pass on the out going tide. My first clients that were fortunate enough to experience the action was Stan Sikora and friends. I kid you not for four hours straight Stan and friends caught Redfish after Redfish. They were all big and we had to check nearly every fish to see if it fell under the 27 inch max. On several drifts Stan and company had triple and even quadruple hookups. Every boat in the pass had a fish on. The were eating at a ferocious pass for hours on end. We even left them biting so we could grab a great meal at the Waterfront. We finished the trip off looking for Snook but the tide was bad and Stan and company had to get home for a Redfish cookout.

My next trip was with Lin Beavis from Punta Gorda and his tournament fishing partners. Lin was interested in finding Snook for an upcoming tourney he was participating in. I had to take them to the Reds first. We caught red after red. Double and triple hook ups were the norm on every drift. Those Redfish were eating everything. Every boat was hooked up as well as all the anglers on the shore. There was even a mother and her two 10 to 11 year old daughters with fish on from the bank. Days like that one are just plain remarkable and it seemed as if everyone was smiling and having a great time. After we left the Reds eating I took Lin and company to the Waterfront where we had a great lunch. After lunch we concentrated on Snook and found some very nice ones but the fellas missed a couple of opportunities and only ended up landing a couple near keeper sized. They did manage 5 or 6 just short grouper.

The final trips I have to report on is a two day trip with Mike Day his brother Butch and Mike's employee Sporty. Once again the Reds were the name of the game. We started off with bait at Chino and then we gave the Snook a shot on the beaches. While on the beach I ran into a client and good friend of mine who said he would call me when the reds turn on. We continued Snook fishing for a few more minutes and then decided to concentrate on Inshore Grouper. I knew the grouper would be there because my good buddy Nelson and I caught over a hundred there a few days earlier. The fellas had trouble getting the hang of hooking the hard hitting grouper. I believe they managed five or six before Eric called on the phone to tell me the Reds had shown up in full force. To make a long story short we caught Redfish after Redfish on every drift for the next hour and a half. The fellas had a great time and we finished the day off at the Green Flash Restaurant on Sanibel because the Waterfront was closed for maintenance.

The next day Mike really wanted ol Sporty to get a shot at the big Jewfish. We went out and caught us some nice jacks and while chasing the jacks Butch got a nice 12 pound Snook for dinner. He did a great job keeping the fish out of the structure. We went to the Jewfish hole and I baited up Sporty with a two or three pound jack. The bite was instantaneous and Sporty was jerked into the structure in two seconds flat. Mike dropped the next bait down and eventually suffered the same fate as Sporty. Off we went after the Reds again but before we tackled the Reds the fellas wanted another shot at the grouper. This time they started to get their grouper feet and landed a good 20 or so grouper on light tackle that were just short. After the grouper we went after the Reds and they were there and hungry just like the day before. The fellas loaded the boat once again with big Reds. They all had a great time and loved the Shearwater so much that they have already ordered themselves one of their own.

To conclude, the fishing has been remarkable and the Snook have really turned on as well. We have been catching 20 plus Snook per day here recently with some nice 10 plus pounders to boot. Don't miss out on some great fishing.

Be sure to check out my good friends Maverick HPX. He is really looking forward to moving into a larger boat for him and his wife. He is willing to let it go for 19,800. Click on the link 2002 Maverick HPX to view Photos and boat description as well as options.
